The Truth is Staring at Us in the Face!

“…and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8.32- ESV – Jesus

The Truth/Facts about @realDonaldTrump and where he is taking America

  • are clear but the implications are
    • so great, so dangerous, and so catastrophic,
      • that most of us (including a good number of his followers)
        • simply do not want to confront or accept it.

WHAT IS THE TRUTH???!!!!

creepy-flora-flowers-2064756-e1566700236140.jpg

  • TRUTH/FACT: Donald Trump is a deeply flawed man.

    • He is a pathological liar
      • He lies incessantly, impulsively and
        • in all things small and great.
    • He is a narcissist
      • (i.e. extremely self-centered, and selfish)
      • far more than the usual politician.
    • He is mean
      • He attacks and seeks to hurt people personally
        • and not always because he is ‘fighting back’,
        • he often responds to disagreements
          • with personal attacks.
    • He is amoral
      • He appears to have no sense or commitment
        • to the difference between right and wrong.
      • He will attack other people of wrongdoing
        • that he himself is guilty of
          • without the slightest hint of self-awareness.
      • All his choices and actions boil down to
        • what is best for him:
          • not his wife, not his children, not the Republican party, not his team, not his staff, not his (now ‘close’) friends, not America’s allies, not America’s interests,
          • just what is best for him in the moment!!!!
    • He appears to lack empathy
      • He is not (easily?) moved
        • by the feelings and experiences of others.
    • He appears unwilling to personally exert himself
      • (when he is not speaking before adoring crowds).
      • He is not a student of history.
      • He spends a lot of time watching TV.
      • He has a significant amount of ‘executive time’ each day.
      • He spends a lot of time golfing.
    • He is impulsive
      • He often acts without forethought and deliberation.
    • He may not always be tethered to reality
      • He appears to believe some of his own lies.
      • He refuses to believe facts contrary to his own narrative/interpretation.
  • The TRUTH:  Donald Trump is not going to and will not change

clouds-cloudy-dark-clouds-247110

  • There will be no ‘pivot’
    • to a nicer or another version
      • of @realDonaldTrump
    • He has not ‘lied’ to us about who he is
      • Old clips of his younger days show that
        • he has always thought he has the answer to every problem, and
        • he must always have the last word.
    • “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time [Maya Angelou]
  • Truth/Fact: Every Tree Bears Fruit that is natural to it!

“Beware of the false prophets, [teachers] who come to you dressed as sheep [appearing gentle and innocent], but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them [that is, by their contrived doctrine (i.e. teaching) and self-focus]. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the unhealthy tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore, by their fruit you will recognize them [as false prophets]. [Matthew 7.15-20 AMP: Jesus]

  • TRUTH/FACT:  THE UNITED STATES AND THE WORLD ARE THEREFORE NOT IN GOOD HANDS!!!

    • The US and the world economy are not in good hands
      • Exhibits:
        • Trade wars without appropriate forethought and planning:
          • “trade wars are easy to win” – Donald Trump
        • Lack of preparation for the looming downturn in the economy
        • Monetary policy by tweets, personal attacks, and ‘gut’ feeling.
          •  “They’re making a mistake because I have a gut, and my gut tells me more sometimes than anybody else’s brain can ever tell me.” Donald Trump (November 2018)
        • Stock Market volatility week of August 19-23, 2019
    • International Peace and Stability are not in good hands.
      • Exhibits:
        • Trump conducts extremely crucial geopolitical relationships
          • on the basis of his personal ‘interactions’ (relationship?)
            • with adversaries and allies:
              • Vladimir Putin, Kim Jung Un, Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron, Justin Trudeau etc.
        • North Korea is still firing missiles off
        • Russia and the US are entering a new nuclear arms race
        • Trump has dictatorial tendencies
          • he appears to want to skip the ‘rule of law’  if  he can:
            • “Our great American companies are hereby ordered to immediately start looking for an alternative to China, including bringing your companies HOME and making your products in the USA.” Donald Trump 08/23/2019
    • America as a Beacon of Light (‘the city on a hill‘) is not in good hands
      • When an organization/country changes its values,
        • does it continue to be the same organization/country?
      •  Exhibit
        • Will Trump willingly leave office or be forced out if/when he looses in 2020?
          • Will he sow discord in society to avoid accepting defeat?
        • Will America welcome fleeing refugees anymore?
          • “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
…Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
            [Statue of Liberty Poem]
        • Will the rights of a free press continue unchallenged
          • in the era of so called ‘fake news’ claims?
        • Will the body politic aspire towards a national, political, economic, and Judeo-Christian ethos characterized by
          • individual freedoms, integrity in public office, rule of law, ‘United’ States, fully representative democracy, or will it
          • devolve into moral relativism, factionalism, regionalism, and division?

  • We are in for a rough ride
    • Exhibits
      • Walking in on young pageant contestants in their dressing rooms; “Grab them [women] by their ….”:
        • More corruption of morals by a sitting President
      • Trump University scandal and subsequent court settlement:
        • More Deceit, more corruption
      • 4 (5?) Bankruptcies:
        • Wreck the American Economy
      • Thousands of Lawsuits:
        • Tying up the American system of checks and balances in knots
          • with fights between the different branches of government, i.e.
            • the courts, congress, and the executive branch.
      • Two divorces, plus cheating on spouses:
        • Broken promises to the people of America
      • Paying off Stormy Daniels and other Scandals in order to win:
        • More corruption of the American Democracy like you have never seen before.
    • All powerful, corrupt and (perhaps evil) political leaders
      • have periods of ‘good results’
        • when the majority of people appear to love them,
        • when it seems they had success after success,
        • when it seems they survived again and again,
          • going from one potential disaster to another,  that is,
        • until their eventual and certain downfall.

Why I (As a Bible Believing Christian) Cannot and Will Not Be Voting for Donald Trump (2!)

In my last post, I argued that

  • the perceived benefits of the Trump presidency
    • from a biblical perspective,
      • are temporary and earthly, not eternal.

Now: The continued Trump presidency

  • from a biblical perspective, will be
    • damaging, and
    • of eternal significance
      • for the Church, for America, and for the world.
  • Under the Trump Presidency
  • Truth/Facts/Reality and our attitudes towards them have suffered.
    • The Trump administration is “An Administration of Lies.”
      • The president is a proven, pathological, and an unrepentant liar.
      • His supporters repeatedly offer “alternative facts”
        • to explain the administration’s actions and statements.
      • Getting more people to believe a ‘narrative’
        • (by retweets, ratings, polls, ‘likes’, ‘going viral’, soundbites, etc.)
        • in modern America
        • is now more important than the facts and
        • has been exacerbated by an administration
          • that peddles lies, obfuscation, spin and/or misdirection.
    • Truth is a Biblical and Christian ideal.
      • Truth is eternal!
      • Deceivers will be eternally punished.
    • Truth is reality and reality is truth.
      • Science deals in facts and objective Truth;
      • without truth and objective facts,
        • normal living is not possible;
          • to live in alternative reality is insanity, and
        • the progress of human civilization is hampered.
      • Justice for all depends on establishing
        • what is true and what are the facts (evidence!).
  • The Image of God
    • present in every human being;
      • (along with a sinful fallen nature) that is,
    • everything that is noble, pure, selfless, and admirable in man suffers.
    • Instead of the image of God:
      • humility, selflessness, love, harmony, peacefulness, self control, patience, gentleness, holiness, mercy….
      • Trump models the sinfulness of Man:
        • pride, narcissism, hate, division, quarrelsomeness, short temper, impatience, meanness, ‘fight back’, vengeance, impurity and indecency….
    • Trump undermines our common human dignity by
      • choosing to divide instead of bringing people together
        • in order to harness political power.
  • The Direction and Fate of the World May Change Forever
    • The Bible predicts that history is marching towards the ‘End Times.’
    • America is the only economic, military, and cultural superpower.
      • Trump has stated he acts based on his guts instincts
      • Trump who appears willing to take unnecessary risks
        • (economic, military, cultural, political)
        • without strategy or clear planning;
        • he can therefore plunge the world into an ‘end times’ scenario
          • predicted in the Bible.
        • This can also weaken America from within.
  • America as
    • a moral beacon in the world,
    • ‘the city on a hill that cannot be hid’
    • a clear voice for universal human rights,
    • model of freedom of the press, and as
    • a model of human dignity,
      • will be lost forever;
        • making the biblical ‘end times’ scenario that more certain.

So count me out, I will not be voting for Donald Trump in 2020!

Why I (As a Bible Believing Christian) Cannot, and Will Not Be Voting for Donald Trump!

All the benefits of my Vote for Donald Trump Appear to be
Material, Temporal, Earthly

  • More Conservative Judges

    • Inasmuch as I want a society
      • where conservative values are respected, this
    • pertains mostly to America, not the Kingdom of God,
      • when judges are appointed
        • by both sides
        • solely for partisan control of the judiciary,
          • and it will ultimately corrupt justice
            • for everyone, forever (!);
    • will not prevent the ongoing moral decay of humanity
      • predicted in the Bible, as we move toward the end-times!
    • Deuteronomy 1.16:  “‘Hear the cases between your brothers, and judge righteously between a man and his brother or the alien who is with him.”
      • That is, justice must be blind to even the closest earthly affiliations.
  • The Possibility of Overturning Roe vs. Wade

    • Inasmuch  as I am pro-life
      • (in Church and personal life
      • and I will work to reduce abortion in society
        • in other ways other than using the force of law)
      • I am also pro-choice (as a matter of law in society), and
    • inasmuch as I will like to reduce abortions in the US,
      • the church will do a better job to impact society for God
        • by modelling selfless, holy, and cross-bearing lives as people of faith,
        • than to try to wield the corrupting tools of political power
          • to force social change; that is,
      • making abortion illegal
        • constrains action by force of law, it
        • does not change people and
        • is only a temporary fix, to the eternal problem of the
          • sinfulness of man, and it
        • does not address immorality within the Church itself;
      • I also have hope that God has a plan even for unborn babies
        • as I believe he does for infants who die early!
    • Matt. 18.10:  “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.”
  • A friend of the (mostly white) Church in the White House

    • is temporary, of this earth, not the kingdom of God
      • if the Church cannot criticize that ‘friend’,
      • if the Church must always praise that ‘friend’,
      • if the Church must explain away, excuse, and lie (‘spin’),
        • when that ‘friend’ lies, divides, and is unrepentant of
          • deceit, meanness, pride and boastfulness, narcissism, and adultery,
        • and thereby abandon its basic mission to a lost world:
          • faithfully proclaim the truth and will of God
          • that we must be
            • true, loving, meek and lowly, selfless, and faithful to the wife of our youth, welcoming, be wronged instead of wronging others, give vengeance to God instead of always ‘fighting back.’
    • Faithful prophetic witness
      • to powerful (and sometimes corrupt) political leaders (kings)
      • is clear in the Bible.
        • It usually involves truth, rebuke, courage, and great risk:
        • Samuel (Eli), Samuel (Saul), Nathan (David),
        • Elijah (Ahab, Jezebel, Ahaziah), Elisha (Ahab), Micaiah (Ahab)
        •  Isaiah (Manasseh), Jonah (Nineveh),
        • Jeremiah (Zedekiah), Daniel (Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar),
        • John the Baptist (Herod)
        • Jesus (Pilate), Peter (Sanhedrin);
        • the Early Church (the Sanhedrin); and
        • Paul (Agrippa).
        • It is never a cozy relationship as the one we see between
          • the White House and white evangelical American leadership.
  • Strong Economy?

    • As good as that sounds,
      • a strong economy is of this earth, not eternal
      • Mark 8.36: “What does it profit a man [nation]….”
    • What if
      • (as the signs are beginning to show, and
      • as Donald Trump continues to gamble
        • with the economy and
        • with the livelihood of millions of Americans,
        • using trade wars),
      • the economy takes a downturn,
        • as is expected every now and again?

black-hair-child-eye-1098769

  • Strong Immigration Enforcement?

    • This excites those
      • whose primary concern is America
        • not the Kingdom of God,
      • who may be driven by
        • lack of knowledge and compassion, fear, distaste, and/or
        • indifference towards
          • those who are different, who are weak, and destitute;
      • who have forgotten, who ignore the fact,
        • that the Kingdom of God is all tribes, tongues and nations
        • that everyone ‘came from somewhere else’,
        • that the Bible overwhelmingly teaches love and welcome
          • for the weak, the widow, the fatherless, the alien ,strangers (!)
        • that Mary, Joseph, and the Baby Jesus were themselves refugees
          • to Egypt from political violence!
    • Matthew 24.44:  “Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’”
    • Revelation 7.9 “…from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb….”
  • Strong Military and National Defense,

    • pertains to only America, not the Kingdom of God;
    • is material, temporary, and earthly.
    • Ephesians 6.  “For we do not wrestle not against flesh and blood…”
  • Second Amendment Rights

    • Is only of this earth, and temporary,  and
    • when promoted unreasonably and at all cost, it
      • UNDERCUTS THE MESSAGE OF THE CROSS:
        • selfless love,
        • sacrifice,
        • give instead of taking life,
        • “turning the other cheek”,
        • “Nevertheless, let your [God’s] will be done not mine”
          • not my right(!)
          • [Jesus!]
      • lacks any sound biblical and theological support.
      • Matt. 16.24: “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”
        • The choice between a gun and the cross is easy
          • I CHOOSE THE CROSS!

Babylon is fallen!?

How White Evangelical America Has Contributed to the Demise of American Greatness

By Giving Uncritical Support to Donald Trump

My ‘Family’ Disappointment!

“Fallen, fallen is Babylon the Great!” the angels shouted

  • (twice, in the book of Revelation: 14.8 and 18.2) and now,
    • in the age of President Donald Trump,
      • there is every reason for followers of Christ in America to ask,
        • Has America’s greatness reached an inflection point such that
          • America can become the modern Babylon?
        • Is the Church, specifically the White American Evangelical Church contributing to this downfall?
        • What does the future hold?
        • Can the White Evangelical Church in America get out of this mess?
          • How?

No, I am not a White Evangelical Christian.
In fact

  • as you may know
  • I am
    • black,
    • an immigrant
      • from Africa.

But I think I can speak to my white evangelical brethren.

  • They are my ‘family.’
    • I received Jesus Christ under the ministry of
      • white evangelical Western missionaries to Africa
    • A North American Missionary personally baptized me,
      • as a teenager, by immersion in the ocean in W. Africa.
    • North American white evangelical Missionaries taught me how to
      • read, study, memorize, apply the scriptures,
        • to my life.
    • Four white evangelical western missionaries conducted my wedding.
    • I received most of my training,
      • both formal and Informal,
      • as a local pastor, denominational leader, and eventually
      • as national evangelical leader in Africa,
      • from white evangelical missionaries.
    • My Bible College was led by white American evangelical missionaries
    • My master’s Degree in Biblical Exegesis
      • was at a mostly all-white evangelical School.
    • The overwhelming majority of churches I attended when I visited the US
      • were white evangelical.
    • Christian music for me meant
      • (In the early years of the Christian Faith),
        • Evie Turnquist, Amy Grant, Michael Smith, New Creation Singers, Bill Gaither Band, 2nd Chapter of Acts,  etc.
      • Now, I still listen to
        • Brandon Heath, Casting Crowns, MercyMe, Chris Tomlin, Danny Gokey, Phillips, Craig and Dean, Matthew West,  etc.
      • I did also listen
        • to Andrae Crouch, DC Talk, Nicole C. Mullen, and a few African American stars, but my worship and entertainment came from mostly white Evangelical American Christian artists.
      • Radio for me was mostly white evangelical
        • mainly Moody Bible Radio, and K-Love, His Radio, and similar stations.
          • Popular programs were
            • ‘Unshackled’ from the Pacific Garden Mission,
            • ‘Adventures in Odyssey,’ and teachings from ‘Focus on the family.’
              • I raised my (African) Children on the principles of Dr. James Dobson’s – ‘Dare to Discipline,’ and ‘The Strong Willed Child.’
            • I admired, fellowshipped and collaborated in ministry with
              • western white evangelical Churches and non-denominational ministries such as
                • Youth For Christ ministry,
                • Youth with a Mission,
                • Scripture Union (UK),
                • Southern Baptist Convention etc. but
                • most notably the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
              • Apart from the western missionaries who trained me as a disciple of Christ,
                • I consider as pulpit inspiration for my ministry
                  • the preaching and Teaching of
                    • Billy Graham,
                    • Charles Swindol,
                    • Charles Stanley,
                    • David Jeremiah,
                    • Stephen Olford,
                    • John MacArthur,
                    • etc.
                  • The Biographies and some of the books I read were by
                    • W. Tozer (‘The Pursuit of God’)
                    • Andrew Murray
                    • Billy Graham (‘Peace with God,’ ‘Christianity Today Magazine’)
                    • Brother Andrew (‘God’s Smuggler’)
                    • S. Lewis (‘Mere Christianity,’ ‘The Screwtape Letters’)
                    • Chuck Colson’s (‘Born Again’).
                    • You get the idea.
                  • All of the above were consumed by me and many a disciple
                    • at the encouragement of
                      • white North American evangelical leaders and missionaries,
                    • sometimes on our knees in prayer,
                    • as one sought to serve God
                      • with purity, and dedication.

So I hope you believe me when I say that

  • the white American Evangelical church is ‘family.’

But in the age of Donald Trump,

  • I have become extremely disappointed
    • to see the white evangelical American church
      • loose its Biblical and prophetic focus, and
      • ignore the deep truths, and principles in the Bible
        • that they claim to hold dear
        • that is in the various iterations of their ‘Statements of Faith,’
      • turning its back on the very core truths
        • that their missionaries have taught
          • me and
          • many of their disciples overseas.

So why am I disappointed with my ‘family’ in the age of Donald Trump?

  • It is because if you look at
    • what the stalwarts of white evangelical missions and
    • Christian leadership have been teaching people like me:
      • The Bible is the final authority
        • on what God’s will for us
          • is while on earth
        • ‘Sola Scriptura’, ‘Sola Fide!’ (they cried),
          • seeing themselves in the footsteps of Martin Luther.
        • “Set your affections on things above not on earth!”
        • ‘Choose
          • the narrow road which leads to heaven
          • not the broad (‘popular’) road to destruction!’
            • See how Samuel kept his distance from Saul
              • when he (Saul) was no longer willing
                • to humble himself
                  • before God,
              • even though Samuel himself
                • installed Saul into office.
            • See how Nathan the prophet spoke to David and said of him
              • “thou art the man.”
              • ‘What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and loose his own soul?’
                • ‘Nothing!’
                • They shouted and
                • preached and
                • strained and
                • insisted to us,
                  • their disciples!
                • ‘It is impossible to serve God and Money.’
              • ‘Do not be unequally yoked with evil, but
              • renounce evil in all of its forms.’
            • See how Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights to prepare for the ministry.
            • See how he resisted temptation
              • by quoting the scripture.
            • See how Jesus would not take the whole world.
              • that Satan ‘offered’ him,
                • in a moment of time,
              • in order to fulfill his calling.
            • “Speak up for the fatherless, the orphan, and outcasts of society, the alien”
            • See how Jesus himself fled political and religious persecution with his parents to Egypt
            • See how Jesus was gracious with the woman caught in adultery
            • See how Jesus at sat among and talked with prostitutes
            • See how Jesus went to stay with Zacchaeus, the ‘sinner’ and
              • see how Zacchaeus confirmed Jesus was right in his actions
                • when he demonstrated
                  • true repentance and
                  • willingness to make restitution
              • See how we raise funds to help the orphans in the slums of India, Haiti, Sudan, Africa, etc.
  • The fact is, I do not know anyone
    • who is prepared to make the case
      • that any of these values
        • apply to Donald Trump
          • as a person!
  • And yet white American evangelicals appear to have embraced him
    • unquestioningly!

Thus most people in my position

  • will be disappointed
    • at how the white evangelical church in America
      • have seemingly and unquestioningly
      • given the appearance
        • that they have no biblical objections to
          • what Donald Trump has done
          • what Donald Trump has said and to
          • what Donald Trump continues to do and to say in short
          • the unbiblical values and principles that
            • Donald Trump’ character, history, and personality represents.
          • The evidence is seen in the statements
            • on Christian Talk Radio,
            • by Billy Graham Jnr.,
            • by Liberty University President, Jerry Falwell Jnr.,
            • on Moody Bible Radio talk shows
            • of Mike Huckabee,
            • by Pastor Jeffress, and
            • by many more evangelical leaders, along with
            • the deafening silence and seeming continuing support
              • (if the polls are to be believed)
              • among the rank and file white evangelical Christians.

My ‘family’ now seems to prefer

  • to embrace, justify, excuse, and defend a man
    • who has shown
      • no remorse
        • for sin and wickedness in his past life,
      • no change, and certainly
      • no repentance
        • for a life of deception,
        • injustice,
        • arrogance,
        • pride,
        • greed, and
        • rebellion against God,
        • bigotry, and
      • to accept without intellectual curiosity
        • only what pundits on ‘their side’ say
        • not what the Bible says,
      • to appear to have put access to power now
        • rather than focus on the rewards of eternity,
        • to be part of a ‘winning’ crowd
        • even if it is power wielded by one who led a life
          • suffused with lies,
          • vulgarity,
          • meanness,
          • unrighteousness,
          • serious ethical short comings if not
          • actual criminality,
          • division
        • to consider their earthly ‘rights’ supreme, and
        • to have them (their rights) fulfilled now,
          • seemingly insensitive to the pain of others,
        • to espouse or
        • to at least APPEAR to give their spiritual covering
          • to someone whose character is a textbook example of narcissism,
          • thereby effectively rejecting the ideal of the cross:
            • no greater love than
            • self-sacrifice
          • and perhaps in the process
            • subconsciously
            • embracing
              • self-centered success
                • as the new Christian ideal
                • a complete opposite of the cross and its message
          • in order to gain access to power and
            • to ‘winning’
              • in exchange for
                • their integrity,
                • fulfilling their prophetic and
                • missionary call
                  • to a lost world
                  • to pursue earthly wealth
                    • at all cost and
            • to gleefully and sometimes willfully
              • align themselves
                • with those who greedily seek
                • the greatest monetary benefit
                  • by manipulating the levers of power
                    • often at the expense of those
                      • without access to power
                    • to become hopelessly compromised by aligning themselves with a pathological liar
                      • even though the devil
                        • is the father of all liars
                      • even though the Bible says that
                        • all liars will be cast to hell
                      • even though we are not supposed to tell lies
                        • either to God,
                        • to ourselves and
                        • to others
                      • even though
                        • we are taught to
                          • rebuke and
                          • expose lies
                            • to others and
                            • by others
                      • even though we are told
                        • to have nothing to do with darkness
                        • to expose the deeds don in darkness

Now my ‘family’ prefers to

  • support someone who wants to hide
    • his past activities:
      • (his taxes)
      • (his contradictory statements)
    • in order to walk in ‘darkness’
      • to stall investigations
        • that may throw ‘light‘
          • on how ‘dark’ his past actions may have been
        • align themselves with
          • a bully, the aggressive,
          • the dog whistler,
          • the dominant class
          • the direct opposite of Jesus teaching
            • “Blessed are the poor in spirit”
            • “Blessed are those who mourn”
            • “Blessed are the meek”
            • “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness”
            • “Blessed are the merciful”
            • “Blessed are the pure in heart”
            • “Blessed are the peace makers”
          • one who emphasizes ‘Law and Order’ as if
            • that is different from the ‘Rule of Law’
            • which is based on the fact that
              • “all men are born equal”
              • which itself is a restatement of
                • the biblical truth
                  • that all men are created
                    • ‘in the image of God’ and
          • with one who subtly promotes the idea
            • that all those who look different
              • are also most likely to be ‘dangerous’ and
              • to not love America and
            • to give some cover to those who would take advantage of the weak
              • and promote hate,
              • the antithesis of Jesus teaching;
              • “love one another even as I have loved you”
            • to give cover to those who would exploit
              • the poor,
              • the alien, and
              • the orphan
                • in direct contrast
                • to God’s clear and
                • overwhelming teaching
                • in both old and new testament
                  • Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others
  • This is a disappointment because they
    • (the white evangelical church) should be
      • the conscience of society
      • the “light of the world”
      • the healing hand of Jesus
      • the prophetic voice
        • against injustice and wickedness
        • that cannot be silenced,
      • the prophetic witness to the world that
        • righteousness, justice, mercy, and evil
          • are real.
    • Instead the focus is more
      • on churches, meetings, and fellowships
      • on wonderful ‘spiritual’ truths,
      • on ‘family friendly’ truths,
      • on ‘uplifting’ and ‘positive’ truths,
      • on method and strategies of how to get to become
        • ‘mega’ churches,
      • on how to achieve increasing ‘quality of life,’
      • on treating
        • Church attenders and believers
          • more as customers
            • whose needs are to be met
              • so they will ‘buy-in’ to what the church sells
                • by shaping the gospel to fit the culture
                • meaning to give them
                • what they want and
                • going where the culture is going
              • than as disciples of
                • the ‘ugly,’ “rugged,” and
                • inconvenient message
                • of the cross that
                  • ‘makes the comfortable restless’ and
                  • welcomes, comforts, and offers peace
                  • to the outcast.
                • ignoring the elephant in the room:
                  • A national leadership
                  • that is morally corrupt, and
                  • a threat to the very ideals,
                    • derived from Judeo Christian values
                      • that they
                      • (the white evangelical American Christians)
                      • told us, have made this country great.

My disappointment may be difficult to understand, but for people like me,

  • white north American evangelical missionaries were ‘gods.’

When white north American missionaries came to Africa, and

  • exposed us to the white evangelical church in the West,
    • they came with
      • medicines to heal our many tropical diseases
      • food aid to feed ourselves and our poor
      • improved ways to maintain our health and live longer
      • new style of buildings
      • new ways of managing our organizations
      • ‘superior’ logic to our superstitions
      • ‘superior’ knowledge about health, food, politics, nature, technology etc.
      • many other ‘wonderful’ quality of life improvements
      • lots of money
      • we did not even begin to imagine possessing and
        • above all
      • the true gospel to take us all to heaven!

So they were ‘gods’ to many of us.

  • We received improved material sustenance,
  • were taught ‘right and wrong,’ and
  • were given the ‘keys’ to life beyond the grave!

As ‘gods!’

  • they also shaped our very lives
    • into their own image, or
    • in hindsight now,
    • in their own ‘imagination.’
  • They helped us
    • chose our mates
    • raise our children
    • towards the ‘right’ careers.
  • They opened doors
    • to many an African disciple
    • to better jobs and
    • education in the West
  • They also critiqued our culture and our societies.
    • “The Judeo-Christian values system,”
      • they said
      • “is fundamental
        • to understanding the greatness of America”
      • We were backward
        • because of tribalism –
          • “if what the tribe wants is always ‘right’,”
            • they said,
            • “it is wrong.”
          • We were too “community or tribe oriented”
            • instead of individual oriented
              • which is the right way.
            • We were too attached to unfounded fears
              • instead of facts.
              • That was ‘superstition’.
            • We were too afraid of change.
            • Our countries would be better if we
              • practiced and
              • cherished democracy, and
              • if we respected
                • democratic institutions and especially
                • the separation of powers.
              • Corruption is among the things
                • that is a huge drag on our economies
              • The leaders we have
                • are a reflection of the people
                  • who vote them into office,
                  • who allow them to stay in office
                  • (i.e. they represent who we are).
                • We as ‘backward’ societies
                  • were afraid to speak truth to power.
                • Dictatorship was wrong.
                • Dictatorship makes our countries
                  • backward,
                  • undeveloped, and
                • The things that occur in our countries
                  • will never happen in America .
                  • Dictatorship will never be allowed in America
                    • because a dictator’s power comes from the people
                      • who support him,
                      • who do his bidding,
                      • who defend him,
                      • who explain away his tendency
                        • to disregard
                          • the sanctity of human life
                        • to meanness, wickedness, callousness and
                        • the lack of basic human decency in his ways.
                      • In America, the people around political leaders
                        • will never let themselves be used
                          • by anyone
                            • who aspires to be
                              • a dictator!

And now in America, here we are in 2017,

  • we see these same things happening in America and
  • the white evangelical church
    • is either being silent, cheering, ‘spinning’ or pretending
      • ( ‘spinning’ is actually ‘deceiving,’
        • which is ‘lying’
          • which is a sin
            • in the Bible).
          • as if what we see with our own eyes
            • is really not happening, or
            • that it is not that important.

Is Babylon Fallen?!  What is going on?!
